Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Prepare the Baking Dish: Line a 9x9 inch baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. Spread the Nuts: Evenly spread 1 cup of chopped pecans or almonds at the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  3. Combine Ingredients in a Pot: In a medium-sized pot, combine 1 cup of butter, 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1/4 cup of water, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
  4. Heat to Hard Crack Stage: Cook the mixture over medium heat until it reaches the hard crack stage at 300°F.
  5. Add Vanilla and Pour: Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and immediately pour over the nuts.
  6. Sprinkle the Chocolate Chips: After pouring, let the toffee cool for about 2 minutes and sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot caramel.
  7. Melt and Swirl the Chocolate: Cover the baking dish and let it sit for about 4 minutes to melt the chocolate.
  8. Optional Toppings: Sprinkle chopped pecans and/or flaked sea salt on top of the melted chocolate.
  9. Cool Completely: Allow the toffee to cool completely for about 4 hours.
  10. Cut into Pieces: Once set, lift the toffee out of the pan and cut into bite-sized pieces.
