Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Whisk egg yolks and sugar together in a mixing bowl on medium speed for about 5 minutes until pale, thick, and creamy.
  2. Gently fold in mascarpone cheese until smooth but avoid over-mixing.
  3. In a separate bowl, whip egg whites until they form stiff peaks, then fold them into the mascarpone mixture.
  4. Brew strong coffee and let it cool slightly, then stir in coffee liqueur if using.
  5. Dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture quickly, then layer them in a dish, followed by half of the mascarpone mixture.
  6. Repeat the layers with the remaining ladyfingers and mascarpone, then cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  7. Dust with cocoa powder just before serving.
