Ingredients

For the Blackberry Syrup
  • 1 cup fresh blackberries Fresh, ripe blackberries yield the best flavor; frozen can be used but may change the texture.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Provides the sweetness to balance the tartness; for a natural sweetener, try honey or agave syrup.
  • 1 cup filtered water Serves as the base for both the syrup and the lemonade; filtered water is recommended for a cleaner taste.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Optional; adds a delightful depth of flavor.
For the Lemonade
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice Essential for that unmistakable tartness; always stick to fresh lemons for the best zing.
  • 3 cups filtered water Mixes with the lemon juice to create the lemonade base; adjust according to your desired strength.
  • 0.5 cup blackberry syrup Sweetens the lemonade and adds that signature blackberry flavor; tweak the amount based on your sweetness preference.

Equipment

  • Medium Saucepan
  • fine-mesh sieve
  • large pitcher

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions for Blackberry Lemonade
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of fresh blackberries, 1 cup of granulated sugar, and 1 cup of filtered water. Heat the mixture over medium-high heat, mashing the blackberries gently with a fork or a potato masher as it heats. Allow the syrup to simmer for about 10-15 minutes until it thickens slightly. Once it reaches your desired consistency, remove it from the heat, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve, and let it cool for 10 minutes. If desired, stir in a teaspoon of vanilla extract for added flavor.
  2. While the blackberry syrup is cooling, squeeze approximately 4-6 medium lemons to extract about 1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice. In a large pitcher, mix the lemon juice with 3 cups of filtered water. Adjust the water based on your taste preference. Give it a good stir to combine the flavors before adding the blackberry syrup.
  3. Once the blackberry syrup has cooled, add it to the lemonade mixture in the pitcher. Start by adding half a cup of syrup, then taste for sweetness, adjusting as necessary. Stir well to ensure the syrup is evenly mixed.
  4. Fill tall glasses with ice and pour the refreshing Blackberry Lemonade over the top. For a beautiful presentation, garnish each glass with fresh blackberries and a slice of lemon on the rim. Serve immediately.
